I rarely buy new shirts, shorts, or socks and when I do its often cheap brands and close-outs, and I use cheap sunglasses. I try to hit the trails on my way home from work to save on gasoline. I only enter a couple destination races per year and these are usually in state and I usually camp rather than pay for accommodations. My largest expense is for shoes and entry fees. My most frequent expense is gels, electrolytes, supplements and recovery foods and it adds up. I've tried making my own gel with some success. I think one of the biggest wastes of money is getting caught up in new gadget and gear lust, and/or trying to find shoes and hydration systems that work well for the individual. Its hard to find out what works without buying it and using it. As a consequence most of us probably have more than a few pairs of shoes and hydration systems that we don't use and can't return. |
